I love Belsay Hall in Northumberland because there's very little in it and you can go off exploring the rooms, staircases and cellars and imagine what it would have been like to live there, without being interrupted by keen volunteers eager to give you a detailed history of the place and placards telling you all about tapestries and furnishings.

On a recent visit I overheard a conversation between a grandmother and her granddaughter which involved the young girl complaining that it was boring because all the rooms were empty. Yes, the rooms are empty, but there are plenty of fascinating details and hints of a former life if you look hard enough.
